At one point, it seemed Konami would completely exit game development to focus on live-service mobile titles and Pachinko Machines. Since their return to development, it has been impressive to see their partnerships and game development bring about a satisfying roster of titles. While we wait the last few weeks before the release of Silent Hill: Townfall, Konami announced a new title called Rhapsody in Scarlet, an action-adventure game, during today’s Sony State of Play event.
Rhapsody in Scarlet is set in 1920s New York, with a jazz-influenced soundtrack. Players take the role of Ellie Myers, a young woman pursuing a career as a Jazz singer. She is also a Magnus, a magic user who gets caught up in a conflict with the mafia, which is full of magic users as well, having to use her abilities to fight across the jazz-filled, glitzy streets of the city.
The game employs a fast-paced take on combat, with Ellie being able to employ a range of skills to defeat the fantastical monsters that attack her, including weapons like a sword and claws. She can also summon a wolf-like character that acts like a familiar, named Sköll, fighting alongside her in arena-style battles, as well as being ridden for lengthy mobility segments, dodging attacks as they run along the streets. There are a few other summons showcased during the trailer as well, offering what looks like diverse combat.
Following the first State of Play, another trailer was showcased during the State of Play Japan showcase. This trailer focused more heavily on the story, showcasing additional characters like Ilya Jones, who will serve as one of Ellie’s closest allies despite the two not always seeing eye to eye. A few other characters are given some screen time as well.
No Release date for Rhapsody In Scarlet was provided at this time. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.
