Batman Arkham Developer Rocksteady Credited As Co-Developer on LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

When originally announced, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight quickly gained interest from fans, for besides just being a new LEGO Batman game, it also had gameplay harkening back to the classic Arkham Games from developer Rocksteady. Given that Rocksteady themselves had just wrapped up Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which received a lukewarm reception, something filling that void was a welcome sight.

Now, with the reviews out and in the wild, it turns out that TT Games didn’t just borrow from the developer of the Arkham games to craft their LEGO outing. VGC has revealed that developer Rocksteady is also listed as a co-developer of the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, something fans probably suspected in some part.

According to the credits of the game, around 24 developers from Rocksteady contributed to the game. This includes a producer, designer, and several senior programmers and artists who helped with this latest LEGO game. In addition, Warner Bros. Montreal, the developer behind Gotham Knights and Batman Arkham Origins, is also credited on the project, albeit to a lesser degree.

DC in gaming has had a rough go of it in recent years. Both Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League opting to focus on cooperative or live-service gameplay, with Batman himself being minimal in both. Suicide Squad drew particular ire from fans due to the passing of Kevin Conroy, the iconic voice of Batman for 30 years, before the game was released, making it his final performance as the character.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League received mixed reviews, only lasting a year before the title’s servers were shut down for good. The commercial failure of the game ultimately led to Warner Bros. taking a $200 million loss on the game. Given the positive reception to Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, knowing Rocksteady had some hand in the game should showcase that they still have what made their Arkham games special; they just need the room to put it on display.
