Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword has marked another strong showing for them this year, hitting 1 million sales on launch day. This milestone has pushed the Onimusha franchise, in total, past the 10 million sales mark, with this newest entry releasing 20 years after the Samurai series last saw a new entry (though two remasters have been released since then).
In an online statement made by the company concerning these sales, it was stated:
Through several marketing initiatives before launch, such as multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions, Capcom worked to expand awareness among a broad range of users, resulting in sales surpassing 1 million units on the day of its release.
While this is an important milestone, marking a third franchise with strong sales in this year alone (Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata), there might be something more interesting not in their statement. Mainly, with Onimusha: Way of the Sword returning the franchise to an active status, Capcom is exploring doing the same with other series. They stated:
In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title.
Obviously, Capcom has a robust library to choose from of franchises that haven’t seen release in quite a long time. The obvious choice when hearing this, though, is Dino Crisis. The franchise, which played similarly to Resident Evil, just with dinosaurs, has been a fan-requested series for revival for years, and Capcom has ported the classic titles to places like PC and PlayStation 5, so they are aware of its existence, if nothing else. Other game franchises could include the Darkstalkers fighting series, the sci-fi shooter Lost Planet, or maybe Super Smash Bros rival Power Stone. Who can say.
What we do know is a new Mega Man title, named Mega Man: Dual Override, is slated to release sometime in 2027. While Mega Man hasn’t been completely dormant, it has been nearly a decade since Mega Man 11 was released. A new Okami title was also teased by Capcom back in 2024, though very little information was given at that time. The original Okami title was released in 2006, 20 years ago, and has been a beloved game since.
