Square Enix is usually present during Nintendo Directs, and today’s was no different. They showcased a few titles, notably showcasing Final Fantasy VII Revelation running on the Nintendo Switch 2 early on in the presentation. One more welcome and unexpected announcement of the show, though, was that of Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, a full remake of the third entry in the long-running Square Enix series, adapting the 1995 entry for modern audiences.
The Remake follows pretty closely the formula set by the remake of the second entry, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. If you have not played that game, first off, what is wrong with you, and second, don’t worry. Both entries are completely self-contained, similar to other Square Enix franchises like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, meaning that no matter where you start your Romancing SaGa journey, you can enter fresh and enjoy.
The trailer opens with a dark star blocking out the sun; this is part of an event known as the Death Eclipse, an event that occurs every 300 years. The player will be able to choose one of 8 characters to set off on an adventure to stop the world from ending with the opening of the abyss gate. The game is completely rebuilt from the ground up with 3D visuals, voice acting for cutscenes, and a newly arranged soundtrack.
The title will retain its turn-based combat, with abilities like glimmer, which allow the characters to learn new moves mid-combat. United attacks will also be featured, allowing characters in your party to team up to deal a devastating combo to your foes. One of the key elements is also the ability to choose your path and characters, which then changes the story as you progress.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United is set to release on February 16, 2027. It will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
