Final Fantasy Resonance Has Strong Start on Steam, Hitting Single-Player Concurrent Player High for Series

Final Fantasy Resonance has had a strong showing for Square Enix on Steam, with the franchise’s first HD-2D title managing to set a new record for the franchise on Steam. Over the weekend, the title managed to reach a new peak concurrent player count on the digital platform for a single-player entry in the series. It surpassed the previously held high that was achieved by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth when it released in January of 2025.

Shortly after the release of Final Fantasy Resonance on PC, the title hit 28,000 concurrent players, surpassing Dragon Quest III HD-2D to become the second-highest for the company, before passing the 40,564 set by Rebirth to achieve a player count of 42,885. These numbers come from the database at SteamDB. This is fairly important for Square Enix overall, posting strong sales numbers on the platform, but also a major milestone for the Final Fantasy series as a whole.

While Final Fantasy Resonance surpassing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a big deal, especially given the scope of both games, there is a more essential reason this number really matters. Rebirth was released around a year after the title was initially released on PlayStation 5, leading to a more tempered response to its PC release. Square Enix, at the time, under new CEO Takashi Kiryu, had stated that they planned to be more multiplatform than previously, releasing titles as exclusive to PlayStation or the Switch at launch.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was still under exclusivity at the time, but Square Enix has finally begun to make good on their promise, with a large majority of their titles now set to release across all platforms. In 2027, both Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Kingdom Hearts IV are set to release across console and PC on day one. These numbers could indicate that the strategy is finally paying off in a big way, cueing up these next two titles for strong showings as well.

All of this, though, is for the company’s single-player titles, which obviously they are more known for. Square Enix currently has a much higher concurrent player count for another one of their titles. Final Fantasy XIV, the franchise’s MMORPG, set higher numbers five years ago, doubling the numbers set by Resonance with the release of Endwalker, hitting 95,150 players. This number is holding firm, for now, but these numbers could indicate stronger upticks as the company continues, which might rival this.
