First-party PlayStation developer Sony Santa Monica has announced that they will be delaying the release of God of War Laufey by around three months. The official reason for this delay, according to a statement released by the studio via social media, is that the game requires additional work before it will be ready for release. Instead, the title will now release on May 20, 2027, rather than February 16, 2027, a change nobody could be upset about given how crowded February is now looking.
In their statement, the studio said:
Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans.
With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027.
We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.
On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we’ll be back to share more updates soon!
God of War Laufey will be the first mainline entry in the series to follow a protagonist besides Kratos. Instead, players will take control of Faye, the Norse wife of Kratos, who dies shortly before the 2018 reboot. Set in the Everwhen, a multi-mythological afterlife, it will follow her journey through death as she squares off against gods from Egyptian mythology to Shintoism.
While Kratos will not be the lead, the character is still expected to appear throughout the game, with the gameplay trailer having previously been showcased featuring a voice-over from the titular God of War. While we have not seen much beyond that initial showing, a PlayStation Blog post about the game featured a picture suggesting that we will see Kratos in a Greek setting as well, which would make sense given the polytheistic setting of the Everwhen.
Santa Monica Studio has also announced that there is a lot more Kratos still to come from the series. It was previously announced that full remakes of the original Greek trilogy of God of War are in development, though nothing has been showcased for them as of yet.
