Square Enix announced a new Final Fantasy spin-off during the Nintendo Direct event held in June 2026. Final Fantasy Resonance, which will release later this year and adapts the first season of the Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius mobile game, which was closed in 2024 for most of the world and 2025 for Japan. It will also include some content that was featured in updates to that game, as well as new story content exclusive to this version. To be clear, this is not a full port or remake, but instead uses the mobile game’s plot as a foundation.
What’s interesting is that Final Fantasy Resonance will play like a traditional Final Fantasy game in contrast to more recent entries. Combat will play out through a turn-based system, rather than using the ATB system. The game will also feature a 2.5D art style, through cutscenes and exploration, looking very similar to Square Enix’s popular Octopath Traveler, a style that has been used across multiple titles from the studio.
A major component of the combat system in Final Fantasy Resonance will be equppable visions which act like a job system for your party and can be collected and attached as you continue on your journey. These visions will also add new abilities to your party members and level up independently. These visions take on the form of characters from other Final Fantasy games throughout the series, with the trailer featuring Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, and Zidane from Final Fantasy IX, to name a few.
Similar to Brave Exvius, the narrative follows Rain, a highly regarded knight from the kingdom of Grandhelt whose father is the king. Drawing from a classic component of the series, Rain must set out on an adventure of might and magic to protect the magic crystals of the land and save the world from the process. You will travel across multiple continents with the aid of vehicles like an airship, take on optional dungeons, and find espers for your party member, Fina, to summon.
Final Fantasy resonance will release on October 22nd, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
