For the rest of this year, we will probably be hearing a lot about which games are still supporting physical media. This was an event that started shortly after Grand Theft Auto VI announced it would include a code in the box rather than a disc for people who buy a physical version of the game. Ironically, one of the first games to do so was Marvel’s Wolverine from developer Insomniac, only a week before Sony, which owns Insomniac, stated they would be killing discs by 2028. Now, Xbox is taking the opportunity to confirm a physical disc for the upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved.
On social media, in a blog post addressing Frequently Asked Questions, Microsoft led with the fact that Halo: Campaign Evolved would include a disc in the box of the physical edition. The company seems to be positioning this news as a major selling point. A post on Twitter overnight also included bullet points recapping what was discussed, with “Physical discs” at the top of the list, even above Machinima mode, and handheld optimizations.
The blog post specifically stated:
Q: If I buy Halo: Campaign Evolved at a retail store, will there be a disc in the box?
A: Yes! Buying the Xbox or PlayStation version of Halo: Campaign Evolved at your local retailer will result in getting the physical game case and disc so that you have tangible items to add to your collection.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a completely remade version of the first game in the long-running franchise, which was released in 2001 as a launch title for the original Xbox console. This new version of the game will include 3 new missions, an expanded arsenal of the classic, as well as a complete overhaul to the graphics and gameplay, with the entire thing being rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. The Machinima Mode will allow players to quickly exit into freecam, lower weapons, and even control your spartan while in freecam.
Halo: Campaign Evolved will be released on July 28, 2026, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Windows PC or Steam. This will make the first time the title has been available on a PlayStation system.
