Cyberpunk 2077 Crosses the 40 Million Copies Sold Threshold

CD Projekt has celebrated the continued success of Cyberpunk 2077, announcing that the title has officially crossed the 40 million copies sold milestone. This is an increase of at least 5 million in sales since the company last reported numbers in November of last year, when the title had reached 35 million in sales. This would be a massive milestone to cross for really any game; however, given the poorly received buggy launch and 3 years of subsequent development to repair both the game and the developer’s image, this marks another step in the game’s massive comeback.

Co-CEO of CD projekt Micheal Nowakowski, stated, via social media:

40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best — creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years. It’s a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this fall.

For fans of the franchise, as Nowakowski stated in his post, a sequel series to the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is currently slated to release this fall on Netflix, with a trailer for the anime recently released. Of course, there is more to look forward to in the universe as a sequel game to Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in pre-production, expected to reveal more following the release of The Witcher 4, which is CD Projekt’s current focus.

Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith has admitted that he will not be involved this time around, but stated he had a chance to review scripts and tour the studio to see what the developers are adding. One of the new additions he spoke about is a second city that will be explorable alongside Night City. He had described this new location “like Chicago gone wrong.” He Stated:

I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment guys, and he was explaining how the new place in Orion, because there’s another city we visit — I’m not telling you any more than that but there’s another city we visit. And Night City is still there. But I remember looking at it and going, yeah I understand the feel you’re going for this, and this really does work. And it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong. I said, ‘Yeah, I can see this working.

This isn’t the only big news from CD Projekt concerning a major franchise, as The Witcher III: Wild Hunt has also topped 65 million copies sold this year. While the title was already a strong seller, it saw a massive surge in sales with the announcement of a new expansion, entitled Songs of the Past, which will add more content to the experience in 2027.
