Sony Announces State of Play Showcase For June

Sony has announced that the company will be holding a State of Play event on June 2 at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET / 10 pm UK time / 11 pm CEST. In a post to the PlayStation Blog, they stated the event will last over 60 minutes, with a new look at the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine from developer Insomniac, along with a multitude of announcements for upcoming PlayStation 5 Games.

Time Turi, Content Communication Manager for Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated:

State of Play returns Tuesday, June 2, with more than 60 minutes of updates, announcements, and gameplay reveals from top studios around the world.

The show will open with a new look at Wolverine, which is currently slated for release on September 15, and given this is the only title mentioned by name, it’s good they are getting it out of the way quickly. Insomniac had previously stated the next look at the game would be in the summer, so this fits with that and with Saros now available. Wolverine is the next and really only big release for Sony coming this year.

Other projects in Sony’s first-party library could make an appearance, though what could be present is some guesswork. Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet could be showcased, with rumors placing a planned release in 2027, but the studio has been hushed about anything concerning the game. My best guess is Horizon Hunters Gathering will be shown, having recently sent out enrollment for a second beta test this May. It appears that the game is building to a potential release that might be put into perspective soon.

It would also be nice if we got an update on Fairgame$, one of the live-service titles to allegedly survive cancellation, but plagued with internal issues and having remained quiet for years. There are plenty of other studios that we know have titles in development currently, such as Days Gone developer Bend Studio and God of War developer Santa Monica Studio, so the possibility for new game announcements is absolutely there.

When it comes to third-party developers, there are a few possibilities in there, such as the upcoming Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, which Sony is publishing. Releasing in August, the game has been featured during multiple State of Play events prior. More importantly, the FlexStrike, Sony’s first-party fight stick (which I desperately want, by the way), has yet to receive a release date, so possibly it will be here? The longstanding suggestion is that, having been announced alongside Tokon, it would release alongside as well. One has a date now, though, and the other does not.

This State of Play arrives shortly after multiple price raises, all of which the company has blamed on “ongoing market conditions.” This includes all Sony hardware, as well as a PlayStation Plus cost increase. Sony has also confirmed that they will be abandoning PC releases for single-player games in a bid to increase the value of their ecosystem, beyond the fact that Microsoft’s next console would have access to them via Steam. There is clearly some pressure here to showcase the value of your console amid these decisions.

June was historically the month in which all major announcements came, thanks in part to E3. Now that E3 is no more, it can be difficult to get all the companies with their digital showcases to make announcements in the same month, but Microsoft has also announced its showcase, which will be held on June 7. Summer Games Fest will kick off on June 5 and run until June 8.
