After several months of speculation, fueled by a major leak at Nintendo earlier this year, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake was announced as the closer for the Nintendo Direct in June 2026. While we didn’t get too much information to go on for the title overall, we did learn that it was aiming for a 2026 release date, with more information coming later this year.
Much of the trailer unfolds as a tapestry, telling players what should be a familiar story. Set in the land of Hyrule, a young bot named Link lives in a small forest right outside the kingdom that is watched over by an old tree. Each of the inhabitants of this forest has a small fairy companion, except for our hero Link, who does not.
The trailer then transitions to an in-game look at Link sleeping, which is all we really get of the actual game. Link appears to have a slightly altered appearance compared to the classic game, though still familiar. While the official engine being used for the remake has not been announced, insiders have suggested it is using the same internal engine as Breath of the Wild, giving the 1998 Nintendo 64 classic an updated look. We will need to wait and see if this version will add anything, like new content, to the title, but rumors have stated that it is being rebuilt from the ground up, with Xenoblade Chronicles developer Monolith Soft aiding. The scale of the remake has also been compared to Final Fantasy VII Remake, though what that entails remains to be seen.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
