The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past Expansion Announced, Releasing 2027

After several months of rumors and speculation, CD Projekt has announced that a third expansion for The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is in development. Entitled Songs of the Past, the DLC is due out next year (not this year, as previously rumored), 12 years and over 60 million sales since The Witcher III was first released in 2015. This will mark 11 years since the last DLC for the title, Blood and Wine, was released in May of 2016.

In a Press announcement released earlier today, CD Projekt additionally confirms that they are co-developing the upcoming expansion with Foll’s Theory, a team that is made up of “industry veterans.” Fool’s Theory is also the developer of The Witcher Remake, which was announced in 2022 and has yet to be showcased.

A few details were given in the press statement:

    • Songs of the Past is a third expansion coming to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
    • It will launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
    • CD PROJEKT RED is co-developing Songs of the Past with Fool’s Theory
    • Songs of the Past will return players to the role of legendary monster slayer Geralt of Rivia for a brand new adventure when it launches in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The most notable detail here is that the DLC will only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. The Title saw a rerelease on both newer gen consoles, and it appears this Expansion will ditch the former gen the title originally released for. While The Witcher has also been released on the Nintendo Switch, there is yet to be a dedicated version for the Nintendo Switch 2, so given this, it makes sense that it is skipping that platform at present as well.

With the new content coming as well, CD Projekt stated that they have updated the PC requirements for the game to “ensure smooth performance and compatibility going forward.” They also confirmed that the livestream, which is planned for tomorrow to mark the anniversary of the release of Blood and Wine, was indeed where they planned to make this announcement. They stated, “We originally planned to make this big reveal during our REDstreams tomorrow, but let’s say we found something we didn’t yet expect on RED Launcher.”

Now that this has been announced, we have a bit more of a clear picture of CD Projekt’s plans moving forward. The Witcher IV has been stated to release in 2027 at the earliest, with the Cyberpunk 2027 sequel not planned till 2030. Ironically, it has been confirmed that Cyberpunk will no longer receive DLC, while their older title is now confirmed to be getting. Cyberpunk will be getting a second season of Edgerunners, though, the very well-received anime based on the game. A Panel at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles is set to give us our first look on July 3 at 7:30 pm PT.

CD Projekt has also confirmed ambitious plans for The Witcher IV, stating they hope to have three Witcher titles, IV, V, and VI, released in a span of around six years. This roadmap doesn’t start, though, until The Witcher IV releases, and we are still waiting on a release date.
