After what feels like a lifetime of rumors and speculation, Ubisoft has finally given us the first look at Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. Rebuilt in the latest version of the Anvil engine, and with input by fans, Resycned is a complete overhaul of the 2013 title, though with the narrative appearing to be expanded upon but unchanged. During the event, it was confirmed that players can expect to take sail on the high seas on July 9, 2026, confirming previous rumors from earlier this month.
The event, hosted by Edward Kenway voice actor Matt Ryan, who is returning to voice the protagonist, gave us a lot of info as to what we can expect to play. For starters, both combat and stealth have both been overhauled to bring the franchise more in line with recent entries. While not restructured to have the RPG elements of titles like Valhalla or Shadows, combat is done with more action focus, including the emphasis on a parry system for Kenway when he fights with dual swords. Using the environment and every tool in your arsenal also appears to be heavily emphasized as you fight.
Crouching can now be freely triggered as you tackle areas where you ought not be. Tailing missions, the bane of most players’ existences, have also seen a change in which getting discovered no longer brings about a mission failure, but forces them to adapt as the mission continues despite this. This is all in conjunction with the improved parkour system to allow for better traversal than the original.
Edwards ship, The Jackdaw, also makes a triumphant return with added firepower for the player’s arsenal and added alternative fire options. Players will also be able to recruit new officers to their crew, each with narrative missions to complete. These officers will also add unique abilities to the jackdaw, such as a broad fire double shot. You will also be able to find pets for the ship, such as a cat or monkey, though the showcase did not confirm if you can pet them.
These are not the only new narratives that the game will get, either, as historical supporting characters like Blackbeard will also see additional story content. It was not stated whether the present-day elements of the game will be removed, as has been rumored to be the case. Because of this, it is unclear quite what this trade-off might look like, though I would argue the more time you get as Edward Kenway, the better.
Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Ubisoft Store, Epic Store, and Steam. There is no word of a potential Nintendo Switch 2 release as of yet, though a few of their recent titles, like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, saw release in a year.
