Marvelous USA has announced that Muramasa: Revenant Blades, the updated remaster of the Vanillaware classic side-scrolling title, will be released on February 4, 2027. Originally released for the Nintendo Wii in 2009, this updated version will be released on the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. In addition to this announcement, a 10-minute gameplay trailer has been released, showcasing both combat and exploration while highlighting the updates brought to this version.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades is a combination of Muramasa Rebirth, an updated version of the 2009 game released for the PlayStation Vita, and Genroku Legends, a series of four DLC stories featuring other characters that were released for that game. Vanillawares’ signature handcrafted watercolor art style is revived in this remaster with 4K visual clarity, as players return to the Edo period to explore across six playable protagonists.

Physical preorders for Muramasa: Revenant Blades are now open across all platforms and are available through the Marvelous USA Online Store, along with select retailers. For PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, the physical version costs $49.99. On the Nintendo Switch 2, the physical version will cost $59.99; however, the full game will be on the cartridge, rather than a game key. A limited edition for the game will also be priced at $89.99 and $99.99, respectively, and will include the game as well as:

a collectible art book filled with over 120 pages of Vanillaware’s gorgeous artwork, a limited CD soundtrack featuring 10 tracks from the score composed by the renowned Basiscape, and a 10”x14” tabletop byōbu folding screen featuring even more stunning Vanillaware visuals, all collected in an outer box featuring dynamic new art of Kisuke and Momohime from Vanillaware’s George Kamitani. Details on digital editions for console and PC will be available at a later date.

An official blurb for the game outlines the narrative and key features, as follows:

Deep in Japan’s past, a great conflict erupts over the ownership of fabled and powerful samurai swords forged by the legendary Senji Muramasa. These swords grant their owner both incredible power and a madness that can be sated only by blood. As various factions clash over these mythical weapons, demons and evil spirits drawn to the bloodshed rampage across the land. These fables explore the fates of six diverse characters whose lives are thrown into chaos by these revenant blades.

    Key Game Features

    • The Ultimate Muramasa: A brand-new localization, including English voiceover, provides immersion like never before. Plus, all six stories are available from the start, confirming this as the complete version of this unforgettable tale.
    • Fluid and Frenetic Gameplay: The side-scrolling, hack-and-slash action has never been better with updated controls, over 100 swords to forge, and dozens of skills to upgrade, master, and customize.
    • Breathtaking Beauty: Muramasa’s fantastical world has been meticulously upgraded to gorgeous 4K, bringing characters, maps, and animations to vibrant life with stunning clarity.
    • Reforged and Refined: Variable gameplay styles and new modes give players more ways to play this classic adventure, and to appreciate the game’s magnificent art and animations from a fresh perspective.

Vanillaware continues to be a strong company, with its most recent release, 2024’s Unicorn Overload, receiving strong praise at the time of release. With the release of Muramasa: Revenant Blade, fans new and old will have another chance to play a title that helped shape the studio. Again, the game will release on February 4, 2027, for the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
