Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Team Ninja have pulled back the curtain on the first DLC Expansion coming to Nioh 3, entitled Hell Rising. Coming next month on August 19th for PlayStation 5 and PC, the DLC will see players travel to the Keian Period, which occurred between 1648 and 1652 during the Edo Period, and was punctuated by the Keian Uprising, which was a failed coup attempted by masterless samurai to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate. In addition to the new region and time period, the DLC will see new weapons, Martial Arts, Soul Cores, and More.

In an official blurb for the DLC, it is stated:

In Hell Rising, players will travel to Edo in 1651 during the Keian era, where they will discover the castle town plunged into utter chaos following the death of the future shogun, Takechiyo. With the cooperation of the one-eyed swordsman Yagyu Jubei and the Spanish envoy Rodrigo, fans will unravel new mysteries surrounding the Spirit Stones to restore peace. The new open-field map, the Keian era, will feature a hellish wasteland ravaged by the gales of the Crucible, where yokai, human rebels and alchemists from foreign lands roam.

It has also been announced that, to celebrate the upcoming DLC, the digital versions of the game will be on sale across both platforms. The digital Deluxe edition is currently 23% off on PlayStation 5 and PC, while the standard edition is 36% off on Steam. This should give players ample enough time to reach the point in the experience where Hell Rising begins, though we don’t know exactly where that is as of yet.

The new weapon coming is the Hoko Yari, a type of lance, and the shield, which will be equipable across the Samurai and Ninja styles, combining the defence of the shield along with the offence of a short spear. This will add new tactical moves as well, such as flinging the shield at enemies. The game will also add a new equipment strategy, entitled the Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scroll. Enemies will now drop rare picture scrolls; however, they must win a special battle associated with the scroll to equip it. These battles are replayable, which allows the scrolls’ special effects to be altered.

A new difficulty is also coming to Nioh 3, which will act as the game’s third playthrough. Called The Enlightened One’s Journey, this extreme difficulty mode will see enemies occasionally receive curse buffs that make them a much more challenging fight, but also more rewarding when the player achieves victory, rewarding players with an influx of divine rarity loot. The Hell Rising expansion will also allow players to further expand their character build with divine rarity graces and powerful special effects.

Earlier this summer, Team Ninja also announced Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, a sequel to their Three Kingdoms-set action RPG, which is scheduled to release next year.
