Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Reportedly Getting 2.5D Brawler

According to a new report, the critically acclaimed Anime Spin-off of Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, is getting a 2.5D brawler. This news is according to a report from MP1st, which stated that the title is currently under the codename Project Gemini, which has been in development under CD Projekt since 2025. In addition, it appears that the title is being developed by WayForward, known for titles such as River City Girls.

Details for the project were provided by an unnamed former employee at WayForward, who pointed to the project currently being in the research and design phase, still a ways off before release. This employee did state that the game has been planned as a “rollback-driven” 2.5D-style beat-em-up, suggesting that the game could share some similarities with the River City Girls series, though WayForward has a few franchises in this vein under their belt to pull inspiration from.

There is one caveat to this news, however. MP1st also reported that WayForward cancelled an, as of then, unannounced title based on an external franchise last year, though it is unknown if this was Projekt Gemini. WayForward is known for having multiple projects in development at a time, as well as developing games for outside franchises such as Yars Rising, BloodRayne Betrayal: Fresh Bites, and RWBY: Arrowfall, to name a few. There is a possibility this was something else, but that remains to be seen.

Regardless, fans of the Cyberpunk series have a lot on the horizon to be excited for. Later this year, in the Fall, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is set to premiere on Netflix. This will be a standalone second season, introducing new characters and conflicts. It is unknown at this time if Cyberpunk 2077 will get any overlapping content to tie in, as it did with the first season, though CD Projekt has confirmed that there will be no new major expansions for the game moving forward.

The reason for that is that CD Projekt is currently focused on developing the game’s sequel, with around 163 developers currently on the project. It is currently not the focus of the company, with The Witcher IV set to release first. While nothing has been officially announced, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith spoke on some details, such as a second city being featured in the game based in part on ChicagoCy.
