Developer Square Enix has announced that the upcoming port of Final Fantasy XIV to the Nintendo Switch 2 will release on August 4, 2026. The game’s director, Naoki Yoshida, announced this news on stage at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival held in Berlin to confirm this news, as well as outline a series of updates that are coming to the game in the near future. Square Enix had previously confirmed an August release date for the game, but today’s news gave us an official date that is only a week away.

Preorders for Final Fantasy XIV are set to begin later today, with fans being told to keep their eyes on Square Enix’s social media for updates and an official confirmation. When the game finally does go on sale on August 4, the first month of sale will be devoid of subscription charges, with the developer working to ensure network stability. After this period ends, the usual subscription charges will apply.
Yoshida Stated during the event:
We knew that you’ve been waiting for this for a long time, so we’re very happy to bring this to you.
The fan event also gave Yoshi-P (as fans affectionately call him) an opportunity to revisit several of the unique elements coming to Final Fantasy XIV on the Switch 2. It was revealed earlier this year at another fan event, for instance, that Nintendo players will require a separate subscription. Yoshi-P stated that at the time this decision was reached after “many months of discussions with Nintendo.” This will remain, but there is some good news as well. Players will not require a Nintendo Switch Online Membership to play the MMORPG, while people who already have a membership on another platform can get a 50% discount on the Switch 2 membership.
Final Fantasy XIV is now only a week away, putting the MMORPG on every major console, which delivers on the company’s promise to have a much stronger focus on multiplatform releases. The next expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, entitled Evercold, is set to release in January of 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC.
